A £500,000 parish hall has opened in Telford after an official dedication by the Bishop of Shrewsbury.

The Right Reverend Mark Rylands led the annual confirmation service at All Saints' Church in Wellington yesterday before leading a procession to the new parish hall, where a commemorative stone had been laid and inscribed to mark the event.

It reads: "AD 2011 – Opening a New Door – Revelation 3:8"

The new parish hall is part of the Open Doors Project, a church initiative aimed at strengthening links with the local community.

Vicar at the church, the Reverend Mark Ireland, said: "All Saints' Church has been at the centre of Wellington since the time of William the Conqueror.

"Our new parish centre will provide this thousand-year-old congregation with state of the art facilities that will enable us to serve the people of Wellington well into the new century.

"It will help us to serve God and be a place where the church and community could come to find out more about the Christian faith. We have lots of groups come to use the hall, from the Wellington Youth Project to a bowling group."

The new parish centre will provide a large, meeting lounge, available for hire by the local community, a new kitchen, full disabled facilities, and a refurbished main hall. The centre will also house the new parish office, open five days a week for inquiries.
