The new primary care centre, which is currently being built in Sundorne Road in the north of the town, will accommodate Albert Road and Mount Pleasant Medical Centres and will serve more than 15,000 patients.
Work on the centre, which is being constructed by Morgan Sindall plc and will be completed in autumn 2012, began last week.
Shropshire County Primary Care Trust today said the development had been a top priority for a number of years because of the size and condition of the existing GP surgery buildings.
Ashley Seymour, development manager from developer Matrix Medical, said: "We are pleased that work has started on site, which has been the result of close working with the GPs, the PCT and Shropshire Council. We are delighted for the practices and their patients, who can now look forward to a new era in state-of-the-art premises."
The three-storey building, which will cover a total of 6,700 square metres, will include rooms for GP consulting, GP training, treatments, counselling, phlebotomy, podiatry, audiology and minor operations. It will also include a large pharmacy.
