The opening of a £35 million academy in Telford has been delayed by six months after part of its roof collapsed, it was revealed today.

The Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley will now open in July, rather than January as planned.

Bosses at Telford & Wrekin Council today said the opening of the academy would be delayed, but Woodlands Primary School and a new leisure centre on the site would still open on time in January.

A spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said: "I can confirm that the Abraham Darby Academy will be open for pupils on Monday, July 9. A letter has been sent by the principal Steve Hawke to inform parents."

The roof collapse saw five workers injured and led to an investigation by the Health and safety Executive, which is still ongoing.

Large diggers were brought in to begin clearing after the steel structure came down on August 25. Developers involved in the build, Kier Moss, said it was doing everything it could to get the project moving.
