Plans for a £500,000 revamp of part of the Shropshire Union Canal in Whitchurch will be formally submitted next month.

Members of the Whitchurch Waterway Trust say the plans – to extend the canal and create a new basin and moorings – will be filed by January 15.

The project would take the canal closer to the town centre in a move designed to boost tourism in the area.

Members have been gathering comments from residents in relation to the project which they say have been generally positive.

Plans were available at the town's Blackberry Fair recently, while a presentation of the project has also been put to members of Whitchurch Town Council.

David Torrens, trust member, said: "We have had lots of people saying it is a great idea. We are currently having 3D drawings of the plans prepared.
