A pupil has been taken to hospital after jumping off a first floor balcony at William Brookes School in Much Wenlock, it has emerged today.

The boy, who is in year 11, climbed over an internal balcony, described as similar to one inside a shopping centre.

The boy hung off the balcony and dropped himself to the floor below as pupils watched before classes yesterday morning. The boy was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Steve Parry, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We did send someone from the school to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford."

Geoff Renwick, headteacher of William Brookes School said the pupil, who has not been named, will face punishment for the act.

"There was an incident at school on Monday involving a pupil who climbed over a safety barrier on a first-floor balcony, lowered himself over the edge and dropped to the floor," he said.

"The pupil suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was released quickly after.

"Clearly the health of the pupil is our main concern, but I can assure parents that we will be disciplining the pupil for what was a very dangerous act.

"The safety and well-being of all our pupils is of the utmost importance, and as with every incident, we will look into why it occurred to ensure that every aspect of the school provides a safe and secure environment."

Mr Renwick added that the boy has apologised to staff.
