An interim postmaster was today installed at a village post office counter which closed suddenly three weeks ago. Post Office officials today confirmed the counter at Clee Hill Stores has reopened.
The counter service near Ludlow closed suddenly in mid-November following a Post Office audit. The closure forced some pensioners to endure a 10-mile round trip to withdraw funds.
Hundreds of villagers signed a petition calling for post office to be re-opened., and a letter was sent to Ludlow MP Philip Dunne and Post Office bosses on behalf of the Friends of Clee Hill Forum.
Post Office spokesman Mike Norman apologised for any inconvenience and reassured people the service would continue .
He said: "I am pleased to confirm that we will today restore Post Office services to Clee Hill.
"A temporary agent has been appointed to operate the branch, while we continue to work towards a longer term solution. We will look for a permanent post master in the future.
"It has remained our intention to provide a Post Office service to our customers in Clee Hill.
"This interim service will be operated from the same location and will offer the same wide range of Post Office products and services."
Post Office bosses said they were unable to comment on the reasons behind the closure. It is understood shop owner Harbhajan Singh, who ran the post office, met with Post Office bosses last Thursday.
