Thugs pushed a 74-year-old disabled man out of his wheelchair and stole £300 during a terrifying raid at his home in north Shropshire, police said today.

The man, who has not been named, was attacked by three intruders at a house in Newport Road, Whitchurch.

Police said the thieves ransacked the man's home and left him terrified. The raid happened between 6pm and 7pm on Wednesday.

Detectives today appealed for public help in tracing the three men who forced the front door of the premises.

They pushed the man from his wheelchair onto the floor before stealing £300 from his shirt pocket. They also ransacked downstairs rooms as they searched for other items of value.

Detective Sergeant John Weaver said today: "This was a frightening experience for an elderly man. Although he was badly shaken, he was not injured.

"We want to hear from anyone who can help the police find these offenders.

"If anything suspicious was seen in the area from about 5pm onwards, do contact Shrewsbury CID on the non-emergency 101 number.

"We are also appealing for information about a red car which was spotted in Newport Road with two young men inside at around 5.30pm.

"It may or may not be connected to the incident and we need to check out if it had any involvement."

Town deputy mayor Rob Hewson today urged the community to help the police catch the raiders.
