A man had to be cut free from the cab of his lorry after it was involved in a crash with another lorry which closed a main road near Shrewsbury for about five hours.

One of the lorries was left jack-knifed across the road following the crash, which happened just before 1pm yesterday on the B4393 near Alberbury's village hall.

The trapped man, in his 50s, was cut free from his driver's cabin by fire crews before being airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

A police spokesman confirmed the man suffered hip and pelvis injuries.

The driver of the second lorry was taken to hospital with head injuries.

A garden wall was damaged in the collision and diversions were set up while crews removed the wreckage.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The driver of one lorry was trapped in his cab and had suffered lower limb injuries. The second driver was out of his vehicle and walking around when emergency services arrived but had sustained a head injury in the crash."

A party in the hall was disrupted by the accident. Resident Joyce Morris said: "It was an old folks' Christmas party, and I think a lot of them had to take a diversion along the Welshpool Road. The traffic was quite bad but they put diversions up, eventually."
