The River Severn area around Shrewsbury was on flood alert this afternoon as Shropshire and Mid Wales felt the full force of overnight gales with weather experts predicting more stormy weather.

The Environment Agency issued the alert after checks late this morning showed rising water levels at the Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury, in Montford.

Earlier the Severn burst its banks by the bridge on the B4398 next to Laundry Wood, near Llanymynech, flooding low lying farmland. Environment agency officials said there were no reports of disruption.

Flood alerts were also in place on the river at Caersws, Abermule and Buttington as well as along parts of the Vyrnwy, with officials warning heavy rain could affect the road running over Meifod Bridge later today.

Tomorrow is predicted to be bright and breezy, but there is a potential for another storm on Thursday and into Friday.

A spokesman for Shropshire Council said there had been no incidents or road closures overnight.
