A 28-year-old man has been charged with stealing £59,000 during a ram raid on a Whitchurch supermarket.

The incident happened at the Co-op store in Wrexham Road during the early hours of September 14.

The man, from Liverpool, has been charged with burglary and bailed to appear at Shrewsbury Magistrates' Court on January 12.

An ATM was stolen during the raid, which police said involved a Toyota 4x4 vehicle being used to ram the outer shutter of the store.

The cash machine was then loaded on to a red car and both vehicles drove off towards Wrexham.

West Mercia Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: "I can confirm that a man has been charged with entering the Co-op Stores on September 14 as a trespasser and stealing £59,000 in cash."

No one from the Co-op was available to comment today.
