A group of cats found abandoned at a home in Shropshire have been taken in ahead of Christmas – with staff at a rescue centre hoping to find new owners for them in the new year.

The eight cats were discovered by a social worker at a home in Telford after their owner became seriously ill and was rushed into hospital.

The feline cuties are now being cared for by Eve Dodds and Jenny Martinez at Jenaveve Cat Rescue near Wem in the hope that new owners will be found for the cats in the coming weeks.

Mrs Martinez said: "We were called by a social worker about two weeks ago who was concerned about a lady's cats. There were 11 cats and kittens left in a house after the owner was taken into hospital.

"The cats apparently had not been fed for approximately two weeks and we made arrangements with the owner's relative to collect them.

"We initially had no room at our centre, but as this was an emergency, we had to move one of the other cats.

"They are in good condition but slightly nervous as well because they've had a bit of a culture shock.

"I'm sure the owner loved these cats because they were extremely well-fed."

The centre was set up two years ago as an extension of the work done by Grinshill Animal Rescue.
