A takeaway restaurant in Madeley will be closed for several weeks after a fire caused severe damage to the premises this morning.

Kuldip Sidhu, owner of Pizza Palace in the High Street, said an electrical fault was believed to have caused the blaze.

More than a dozen firefighters were called out to tackle the fire after reports of smoke billowing from the building just after 7am today.

Police were also called in to close off the road for a short period but it was reopened again by 8am.

No-one was injured but Mrs Sidhu said: "Unfortunately the fire has caused severe damage both to the inside and outside of the building.

"It looks like we will be closed for several weeks.

"The fire looks to have been caused by an electrical fault and it started after we had shut and slowly smouldered away until people spotted smoke.

"We are devastated but at least no-one was hurt, that is the main thing."

It comes after a faulty dishwasher burst into flames in the kitchen of a home in Gobowen in the early hours.

The alarm was raised at about 12.20am last night.
