Bosses of a landfill site near Ellesmere have won permission to continue using it for a further 20 years – despite objections from residents and councillors over noise and pollution.

Tudor Griffiths Limited had originally wanted to continue using its Spunhill site until 2035.

But at yesterday's Shropshire Council north planning committee, members voted in favour of officers' recommendations to extend its life until 2030.

Residents and councillors criticised original proposals after fearing another 25 years use would be too long.

But the company insist its plans will not have a negative effect on residents or the environment and will help protect 70 jobs.

At yesterday's meeting, Councillor Joyce Barrow said: "Think about the economic benefits. We should support our local business."

Erni Upton, of Colemere Residents' Association, said there had been problems with noise and smells.
