A police officer was kicked in the stomach and another punched in the face during a mass brawl at a boxing night in Shrewsbury, a court has heard.

Officers were called to the Lord Hill Hotel on October 28 after a disturbance broke out in the bar after an end of year show put on by the Shrewsbury and Severnside Amateur Boxing Club, Shrewsbury Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

But as police arrived, the brawl spilled out onto the car park and two officers were assaulted, the court was told.

Katie Mycock, 20, of Judith Butts Gardens, Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, and Nicholas Rogers, 24, of Wilderley Crescent, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, both deny assaulting a police officer.

Mr Adam Warner, prosecuting, told magistrates that officers had been faced with an 'aggressive' group of men when they got to the scene and glasses were being smashed and thrown in their direction as the disorder escalated in the car park.

He said Constable Andrea Marston had noticed Mycock in a distressed state next to another man who had been restrained and had initially tried to rescue her from being trampled on as a crowd gathered close by.

He said: "Constable Marston was wearing a standard issue stab vest but as she approached Miss Mycock she was repeatedly swore at and then Miss Mycock kicked out and struck the officer in the stomach after which she felt instant pain."

In a separate incident during the disorder, Mr Warner said Rogers was warned about using abusive language and being aggressive towards officers before he punched Constable Michael Waterworth in the face after being restrained.

Mr Warner said: "It caused a half a centimetre cut to his upper lip and Rogers then continued to resist arrest while being restrained on the floor. "

Constable Marston told the court that she felt 'immediately sick' after being allegedly kicked by Mycock who was wearing stiletto heels at the time.

The trial was adjourned until April 23 after Constable Marston, who is in a plaster cast for an unrelated injury, felt in too much pain to continue.
