A man in his 50s had to be cut out of his van by firefighters after being involved in a crash with a lorry near Oswestry.

The man suffered leg injuries in the crash on the A495 at Porthywaen at 12.42pm yesterday and was taken to hospital.

A woman, also in her 50s, who was travelling in the Ford Tipper van, suffered shock. She was treated for minor injuries at the scene and also taken to hospital.

Firefighters from across Shropshire were sent to the incident and the road was partially closed while emergency services freed the injured and the vehicles were removed from the scene.

Diversions were set up between Llynclys and Blodwel Bank. The country road, a popular route into Mid Wales and to the coast, has been the scene of many accidents over the years.

Last year a meeting was held in nearby Llanymynech which led to Shropshire Council agreeing a 40mph speed restriction between Llynclys and Porthywaen.

Although the speed restrictions were approved in December, the road signs have not yet been put in place.

Councillor Arthur Walpole, who has been heavily involved in lobbying for the speed changes, said the road signs would be put up before the end of the financial year.
