A new 'energy centre' providing electricity and hot water to bars, restaurants and shops in the £250 million Southwater development forms part of plans to revamp Telford Ice Rink, it was revealed today.

The rink will get a £4 million makeover if the plans are approved, with the energy centre housed in an extension at the back producing electricity and heating water for the rest of the Southwater site.

A network of insulated pipes has been installed as part of early work on the Southwater development in preparation for distributing power.

Equipment will be installed in the energy centre to produce on-site electricity. The waste heat generated by the ice rink will be used to heat water.

The rink will also be extended to the front and side to provide space for a soft play area. The restaurant will get its own entrance next to the neighbouring bowling/bingo building.

Charlotte Bone, for the council, said if Telford & Wrekin approved the plans, work is expected to begin at the end of May and the rink would be closed until the end of September.
