A 24-year-old man needed stitches after he was struck on the head with a bottle in Shrewsbury town centre in an unprovoked attack.

Officers said the man was assaulted by another man who ran up behind him.

The victim suffered a cut to the head and had to go to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to receive stitches.

The incident happened between 2.30am and 2.45am on Sunday, close to the Hop and Friar pub in Wyle Cop.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "We are anxious to hear from anyone who witnessed this assault. The victim was knocked to the ground and suffered a cut to his head.

"He managed to punch his assailant as he was being attacked."
