A £100,000 skatepark in a deprived area of Telford will be officially unveiled to the public next week.

Professional skaters and BMX freestylers will arrive in the county on Monday for the opening at Donnington Recreation Ground.

Skate company Tribe is bringing the top skaters to demonstrate their skills and a number of activities will also be available such as graffiti art workshops, face painting and gladiators.

Skater Nick Binnington said: "The new skatepark is awesome and is pulling in people from around the country who want to check it out.

"It's so popular at the moment, which is great as we are seeing some professionals coming to the area."

Donnington Partnership secured funding from the Big Lottery Fund for the opening and will put on a variety of events.

Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for leisure & well-being at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "The skatepark originally arose out of the consultation from the management plan for the recreation ground.

"Telford & Wrekin Council has now completed revamping the children's equipped play area at the site, provided a brand new ball court and now Donnington has a fantastic and extremely popular new skate park.

"The prior consultation of potential users in the design process has ensured that the design meets their expectations."

Council officials hope the park will add to the borough's skating facilities which they claim help to attract visitors to the area. There is also a well-used skatepark in Newport.

The design of the park in Donnington was chosen in consultation with local children and young people.

The skatepark has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund's Fairshare Trust programme and the council.

The day's events will kick off at noon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and finish at about 3pm. All are welcome to attend during the half-term break.
