A woman has died in a crash between a car and a lorry on a notorious Shropshire road where residents have been calling for safety improvements.
The woman, who has not been named, died at the scene of the crash on the A525 in New Woodhouses, Broughall, near Whitchurch. The road was closed to traffic for more than six hours following the smash just before 9.30pm yesterday.
The woman was travelling in a Vauxhall Corsa towards Whitchurch from the Nantwich direction when the accident happened.
She collided with a white articulated Volvo lorry travelling in the other direction.
Inspector Sukhbinder Singh, of West Mercia Police, said the woman's family had been informed. He said the road was closed until 4am.
Insp Singh urged witnesses or anyone with any information to contact police on the 101 non-emergency number.
Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: "The driver of the car sustained multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a young woman and the only person in the car.
"The driver of the lorry was uninjured but was treated for shock.
"Police are anxious to hear from anyone who saw the collision or either vehicle being driven before it happened."
Coroner, Mr John Ellery, has been informed and police investigations are continuing.
Ambulance crews from the West Midlands and North West ambulance services were sent to the scene, along with firefighters from Whitchurch, Audlem and Winsford.
They helped remove the woman from the wreckage of the vehicle.
Last month it was announced that new safety measures would be installed on the A525 after worried residents raised fears about it being unsafe.
The measures include improving signs and visibility, and were unveiled following talks at the Whitchurch Local Joint Committee in January.
County council officials said the work was likely to be done by the end of March.
