Part of a house has collapsed on to a busy main road on the Shropshire/Powys border.

The gable end of the property in Four Crosses, between Oswestry and Welshpool, collapsed at about 8.30pm yesterday spilling bricks on to the A483.

No-one was injured but emergency services were called to make the scene safe.

A structural engineer from Powys County Council has been sent out to assess the damage and the road remained partially closed earlier today.

A spokeswoman for the Mid and West Wales Fire Service said: "We were called to the property known as Sgubor Newydd last night. Part of the wall had fallen on to the road, which is close to the Four Crosses bypass, but part of it was still intact with the house but was unstable, so we had to make it safe."

She added: "We were in charge of making it safe. A structural engineer from the local authority was called to assess the damage and we provided lighting and cut off electricity to the home to make sure there was no danger."

Dyfed-Powys Police said the owners of the house had not been in at the time of the incident.

Inspector Alun Samuel said: "Officers were on the scene a few minutes after the call and the road was closed for safety, just in case anything else fell down and damaged vehicles."
