A car was crushed after a tree came crashing down in the staff car park of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in high winds today.

The Citroen Xsara Picasso was badly damaged when the tree landed on its roof today.

The owner of the car, who did not want to be named but works in a laboratory at the hospital, said nobody was in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

And she spoke of her shock when she found out about the damage and believed the vehicle was now a write-off

She said one of her colleagues was making a cup of tea in the staffroom and saw the tree come crashing down.

The woman said: "It's not what you expect.

"It was a bit blustery but I wouldn't have thought it would be enough to blow down the tree."

She said it was not known what type of tree it was, but said it was understood it was quite old.
