A controversial housing development which opponents fear could spark widespread flooding in the centre of Wem has been recommended for refusal by planning officers.

Bosses from Millhouse (Waterside) Developments have applied to Shropshire Council to create 22 homes off Mill Street, claiming the development will actually protect 100 existing houses nearby from flooding.

The scheme is due to be discussed by the north planning committee on Tuesday.

Planning officers say although the development is appropriate in terms of design and scale, it should be located on different site.

Opponents have raised two petitions containing 691 signatures, despite Environment Agency officials saying changes made to the original scheme should address flooding concerns.

Wem Town Council has also objected to the proposal because of concerns over flooding, overdevelopment and insufficient car parking.
