Waterways bosses have launched a campaign to recruit volunteer lock keepers on the Llangollen Canal in Shropshire and on the Welsh border – backed by actor and adventurer Brian Blessed.

British Waterways is appealing for extra help at Grindley Brook Locks near Whitchurch and at Trevor Basin near Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Its campaign to recruit volunteer lock keepers at location across the country has attracted more than 250 applications, while Mr Blessed has also given public backing to the appeal.

Campaigners say members of the public, canal societies and anyone with a passion for their local canal or river have the opportunity to join in with one of the oldest traditions of the waterways.

British Waterways aims for the 50 locations around the country participating in the scheme to continue to provide a polite and friendly welcome to visitors and boaters.

Wendy Capelle, waterway manager for North Wales and Borders, said: "The waterways in Shropshire and North Wales are an important heritage asset that need looking after, and our volunteers have been able to provide so many additional benefits on top of the fantastic work our own staff carry out which is making a difference.

"I'm absolutely delighted at the response we have had so far but we just need a few extra hands on deck to support the volunteers who have already applied.

"The key qualities we're looking for are enthusiasm and a willingness to learn."
