A 14th century bridge over the River Teme in Tenbury Wells was reopening today after being closed for two months for £1 million repairs.

Workmen completed the bridge's road surface last night and white lines were being painted onto it this morning. It was hoped the bridge would reopen to traffic by noon. The bridge, which is being reopened a week ahead of schedule, closed on January 9.

Dawn Worgan, clerk of Tenbury Town Council, said: "We have been caught slightly on the hop as we thought the bridge would only reopen next week.

"Tonight we will erect bunting and decorations to celebrate.

"There is still work to be done to the bridge like painting but because the road surface is down cars can come into the town again over the bridge."

During the closure some Tenbury businesses said they lost up to 50 per cent in revenue.
