Drug users could get free use of council gyms and swimming pools across Shropshire as part of their rehabilitation, under plans revealed today.

Council chiefs say the proposals are not just about 'giving free gym passes out' and could prove an invaluable tool in helping addicts – by stopping them getting bored.

The recommendation has been made by councillors who investigated why the use of the potentially lethal drug GHB became a problem in Oswestry. The scheme is expected to be rolled out across the county.

Among a list of recommendations is for Shropshire Council's cabinet to agree to 'provide free places for gym, swimming and aerobics to people in rehabilitation throughout facilities across Shropshire'.

The recommendations were made after councillors on Shropshire Council's GHB/Synthetic Drugs Misuse Task and Finish Group heard some drug users were housed in inappropriate accommodation and support and activities were needed.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for leisure, said: "Sport can provide a structure, relieve boredom and remove them from their former lifestyle. This proposal is not simply about giving free gym passes out, it is about giving people chances and choice to participate in activities they have an interest in."

But former Oswestry mayor Councillor Heather Bickerton, said today: "It is terrible they are thinking about doing this when there are so many families struggling to make ends meet and can't afford to take their children swimming. It is a disgrace. I am afraid it seems it does not pay to be honest, straight and hard working any more."
