The clerk at Oakengates Town Council has been sacked, it was revealed today. Michael Gledhill was notified by councillors after a letter was hand delivered to his home.

Mr Gledhill was suspended by the council last June, but the reasons for his departure have not been made public.

This afternoon Mr Gledhill confirmed he had been sacked, but said he could not comment on the reasons as he was still in discussions with the council.

It is understood he has been paid in full since his suspension until February this year.

Oakengates mayor Councillor Steve Wood said the council would not comment on the former clerk's position until a later date.

Mr Gledhill said: "There are still decisions going on and there are still discussions taking place. I need to put various pieces of information to them that they have not considered. It has been an ongoing situation.

"So far they have not taken into consideration any of the facts.

"I certainly didn't want to leave Oakengates Town Council, there was certainly no need for me to leave.

"Until such time as they make their final decision then it would be imprudent for me to go into any further details."

The authority has since advertised for a new temporary town clerk with a salary of between £22,221 and £28,636.

The closing date for applications is April 6.
