Electronic tablets chronicling the fascinating history of Ludlow are due to form a key part of £1.9 million plans to regenerate the town's historic 18th century Buttercross, it was revealed today.
Ludlow Town Council will soon submit a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to transform the building in Broad Street into a learning and interpretation centre.
Town council chiefs say visitors will be able to take the electronic tablets and walk around Ludlow, learning about its history.
Documents drawn up by Ludlow Town Council say the purpose of the centre would be to inform, educate and entertain users.
The documents say: "These users would include visitors, local residents and students, who would be able to view and interact with information delivered over a variety of platforms both inside the building – including a cinema-type display, and touch screen exhibits – as well as traditional panels."
They add: "This interactive experience continues outside by allowing visitors to learn via a handheld video tour."
Ludlow Town Council's application for a glass lift in the 18th century building was approved by Shropshire Council last week.
The Heritage Lottery Fund money will also be spent on repairing Ludlow's town walls and footpaths around the town.
