A major £34,000 project to fix a leaking roof and put up solar panels at Meole Brace Bowling Club should be completed in the next two weeks.
The project was paid for with a grant from Sport England after club bosses wrote to the charity to ask for help.
The panels will raise thousands of pounds every year for the club, bosses said today.
Adrian Jennings, vice captain at the club, said: "We had been in need of a new roof for a few years but in the past we had always thought we were unable to get grants."
Last October, the club's new treasurer, Tony Crundell, wrote to Sport England and the result was the promise of grant funding.
Mr Jennings, 37, from Monkmoor added: "If you don't ask you don't get."
He said the money that would be paid to the club by the National Grid for the power generated by the panels would be a great boost. It is hoped they will generate around £2,500 worth of electricity every year, which will pay for the upkeep of the club.
The club on Meole Crescent has around 400 members and 20 teams.
