Twenty new jobs will be created in a town in Mid Wales when a new Poundstretcher store in Newtown opens its doors over the coming days.

The new store in Pool Road is set to open either today or early next week, according to staff at the site, while the firm says it is excited to be coming to the town.

The store is relocating from the Pryce Jones Building in Kerry Road to the Pool Road site, which formerly housed a Focus DIY shop, which shut last year.

Martin Collinson, company secretary, said: "We can confirm we will be opening a new store in Newtown and creating up to 20 part-time jobs."

One worker, who did not wish to be named, said: "It is great 20 new part time jobs are coming to Newtown as they are much-needed in a town which has suffered more than most in recent times.

"We are working to get the store open at the moment and we are hoping to open today and, if not, it will be early next week."

Joy Jones, a former mayor of Newtown, said she was thrilled new jobs were being created. She said: "I am absolutely delighted Poundstretcher is opening up.

"Newtown has been hard hit by job losses and business closures in the past couple of years, so to hear they are employing 20 people is a great boost.

"It is also good news for Pool Road as, with the closure of the Focus store and the Little Chef restaurant, it was not a good advert for the town as people arrive."
