Firefighters were called to Crescent Road just before 3.30am to reports of a Ford Galaxy people carrier alight.

Just before 4am crews put out a car on fire in Hurleybrook Way, with the blaze also damaging fencing.

Crews then raced to Acacia Drive five minutes later where four cars were on fire. One of the vehicles in Acacia Drive was a taxi. Fire crews had the situation under control just before 5am.

Dave Bishton, a fire investigation officer, said early indications seemed to show the number plates on the cars had been set alight first.

He said: "The investigators are attending every car fire and are working very closely with the police.

"These fires are a disruption to us and the people whose cars are set on fire.

"There were a lot of police on the ground last night and when the calls come in the police cover the ground quickly. Our focus now is stopping it happening."

Wes Shutt, watch manager at Wellington, said two engines from Wellington and one from Telford attended, leaving just Tweedale in reserve.
