Up to 200 people turned out to pay tribute to television and stage star Peter Halliday at a memorial service in Mid Wales.

Mr Halliday, who lived in Welshpool for much of his life, died in February, but his family held a special memorial service in the town's St Mary's Church on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Halliday, who died aged 87, was best known for his starring role in the BBC's sci-fi drama A for Andromeda in the 1960s.

Halliday was born near Llangollen, but his family moved to Welshpool and he went on to spend much of the rest of his life there. He enjoyed a career in theatre, film and TV spanning 60 years working alongside many acting greats, including Richard Burton and Sir John Gielgud.

Family member Eva Bredsdorff said she was pleased to see so many people turn out for the service.

"I hope it was a fitting tribute to Peter Halliday and we were pleased to see so many familiar faces," she said.

She added: "Peter has been in several British and foreign films including Captain Clegg with Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed; Dunkirk and Tiger Bay with John Mills and Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins.

"Peter enjoyed being an actor and was lucky enough to be doing what he loved doing for most of his life."

He is survived by his three sons and five grandchildren.
