Plans for a new bookmaker's in Telford would encourage people to gamble who cannot afford it, councillors have claimed. Ladbrokes want to open a new branch in New Street, Wellington.

The move would create four new jobs and see the betting giant move into an empty former wallpaper shop in the main shopping area of the town.

Telford & Wrekin Council planning officers have recommended granting planning permission for the scheme, with a final decision due tomorrow at a meeting.

But Wellington Town Council has objected as councillors are worried about how it may affect local residents.

Councillors have written to planning officers with their concerns, which include that a betting shop would make the area less attractive and that it might encourage gambling in one of the borough's most economically deprived areas.

But Graham Whiteford from DDP, Ladbrokes' agent, said in a letter to planning officers: "Ladbrokes can ensure the long term occupation of the property and provide footfall and spin-off trade to nearby retailers and services.

He added: "A modern betting office of the type proposed is one of the most vibrant of all Class A2 uses and represents a valued leisure activity."
