An investigation has been launched after a car caught fire at Telford's Wrekin Retail Park.

Fire chiefs said they were treating the blaze at the Bridge Builder pub car park last night as being of 'doubtful origin'.

The car involved was a Vauxhall Corsa.

Wes Shutt, watch manager at Wellington fire station, said police and fire investigators were looking into the cause of the blaze which happened at about 11.30pm.

"There was quite substantial damage to the front and the rear of the car.

"One crew from Wellington attended and we had it under control quite quickly," he said.

"The owner was about and she came up to us about 10 minutes after we arrived. She was with some friends.

"Police and fire are investigating the cause of the fire.

"We are treating it as being of doubtful origin."

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police confirmed that they were investigating the fire, but said they were not linking it with the recent spate of arson attacks on cars in nearby Leegomery and Hadley.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Telford police on 101.
