A 29-year-old father has been jailed for more than five years after attacking another man in the street with a machete, leaving his victim needing major surgery on his hand.

Mark McPhee grabbed the weapon as he sought revenge after two men forced their way into his home and attacked him, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told.

McPhee, of Watergate Street, Ellesmere, confronted a group of men and began swinging the weapon, injuring one of them, leaving him needing surgery.

The court heard tendons, nerves and an artery needed repairing and the operation left the victim with restricted movement in his fingers.

At a previous hearing, McPhee had admitted to being in possession of a bladed article and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident in Ellesmere on July 1 last year.

Yesterday he was sentenced to five years and five months in prison.

Mr Andrew Wilkins, prosecuting, told the court McPhee had gone out onto the street armed with the machete after the earlier confrontation.

Mr Andrew Davidson, for McPhee, told the court his client 'saw red' after the men entered his home and started threatening him.

Judge Mark Eades told McPhee: "I can understand you were angry but the fact you were drinking all afternoon was a significant factor. The injury to the hand was significant and may well have caused your victim permanent injury."
