Hundreds at chippy for taste of the 80s
Anyone remember when you could get a bag of fish and chips for just £1.45?
Anyone remember when you could get a bag of fish and chips for just £1.45?
You would have to go way back to the early 1980s – and that is exactly what Costas Andreou did at his chippy in Welshpool on Saturday to mark its 30th anniversary. Mr Andreou reduced his prices to their 1982 levels, which was when Andrews Fish Bar in High Street first opened.
And more than 600 people lined the streets of Welshpool for a taste as long queues quickly developed.

As well as the fish and chips offer, between noon and 9pm customers were able to buy chips and curry for just 78p, a potato scallop for 5p, a pot of peas for 36p and a sausage for 17p.
Staff also dressed up as characters from the 1980s, including Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses and gaming icons Mario and Luigi from Nintendo's Super Mario Bros series.
Customers were able to snap up five meals or eight items, with a maximum of three fish.
Mr Andreou said the prices had been reduced to celebrate the milestone and to thank his customers for their support over the years.
He said the offer had had to be extended by an hour because people were still queuing after the closing time of 8pm.
"We had more than 600 people come through the doors throughout the day," he said. "It was a fantastic day and I was just pleased to have been able to give something back to the town."
A raffle was held in aid of the Wales Air Ambulance, raising about £325.
"I wanted to do something special to mark the 30th anniversary of the business, it's a long time especially in the current economic climate," said Mr Andreou. He added he wished to thank all his customers and staff.
