Raiders ripped copper pipes from a clubhouse in Telford flooding the changing rooms and causing hundreds of pounds damage.

The thieves also stole £600 of property during the raid on Wellington Amateurs Football Club premises which is in Oakengates. Police today said that copper pipes were taken from the clubhouse's changing rooms and that this had left the floor flooded with water.

The clubhouse was only built last year as part of a £57,000 upgrade to the site.

Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: "It appears thieves removed a lock from perimeter fencing surrounding the club and then broke in by forcing open the door to the clubhouse.

"The thieves carried out a thorough search of the clubhouse before stealing a number of items - with a total value of more than £600 - and making their escape.

"The items stolen from the clubhouse include a black, 32inch colour television and around £200 worth of soft drinks and confectionery.

"In addition, before making their escape, the thieves also broke into the changing rooms at the club and stole some copper piping from the ceiling.

"This theft meant water flooded the changing rooms and in total at least £400 of damage was caused to the clubhouse and changing rooms as a result of this burglary."

The incident occurred at the club on School Grove some time between 2am and 2.30am.

Police would like to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the School Grove or Hartshill areas in the early hours of Sunday morning, and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who suspects they may know who's responsible for the break-in.
