Shoppers at Shrewsbury's Morrisons store found themselves trapped in a car park for up to 90 minutes after a set of temporary traffic lights caused chaos.

The gridlock happened between 11am and 1.30pm yesterday when temporary lights were set up by the entrance to the store on Whitchurch Road by contractors without the knowledge of supermarket staff.

Hundreds of cars were left queuing to get out of the car park, with some having to wait 90 minutes to leave.

Motorists on Whitchurch Road also faced disruption as traffic backed up on to Heathgates roundabout.

Shopper Colin Brady said: "It was a ridiculous situation. We were trapped there for 90 minutes.

"The workers put the traffic lights up outside the store but did not control the entrance to the supermarket. I would estimate there were at least 100 cars stuck and a lot of very angry shoppers."

Matt Costello, duty manager at Morrisons, said the supermarket had not been informed about the work."
