A 34-year-old woman died today after being struck by a train on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

The woman, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene near the Harlescott Lane level crossing. Emergency services attended but nothing could be done to save the woman. Police said the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Arriva Trains Wales said the incident, which happened just before 5am, caused 'minor delays' between Shrewsbury and Crewe. Brian Price, for British Transport Police, said: "Officers are currently working to formally identify the woman, who is believed to be aged 34 and from Shrewsbury. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

He added the train involved was the 4.05am Crewe to Shrewsbury empty passenger stock service.

Arriva Trains Wales said a bus replacement service was provided between Crewe and Shrewsbury.
