Homewares retailer Dunelm Mill today announced it was creating 50 jobs by relocating from Wellington to Telford.
The chain is to move out of its store in Bridge Road, Wellington and is believed to be relocating onto Telford Forge Retail Park.
Town council bosses in Wellington have moved to dispel rumours of Dunelm Mill leaving the town because of slow trade.
Town councillors say the decision does not reflect badly on the town and said the empty premises will be filled.
Dunelm spokeswoman Rachael Miller said: "We will be relocating our Wellington store into a premises in Telford which we are hoping to open later on this year.
"The new 28,500sq feet premises has been designed to accommodate Dunelm Mill's extensive range of homeware items.
"The move will create 50 new jobs while still providing work for all of our existing Wellington staff members.
Town councillor Chris Fry said: "Wellington is a living, breathing town and businesses come and go. Today it is Dunelm.
"It is a significant site and its poses significant challenges but they are challenges we will meet. It is a loss but we will find a way of filling that site.
"Dunelm is not leaving Wellington because it is a dying town, it is leaving because it is so successful it needs a bigger unit."
Wellington's new mayor Councillor Frank Burns said: "Dunelm has been a good firm to have in our town. It is sad but I am sure Wellington will be able to manage and encourage new facilities again." It is expected Dunelm will move into the retail park space vacated by Tesco Homeplus, which is to close on June 9.
Tesco reported a 'disappointing' 2.3 per cent decline in like-for-like sales excluding VAT and petrol in January.
