Investigations were on-going today into the death of a woman who was killed when struck by a train on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

The 34-year-old, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene near the Harlescott Lane level crossing early yesterday.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

Emergency services attended the incident just before 5am but nothing could be done to save the woman.

Arriva Trains Wales said it caused 'minor delays' for passengers travelling between Shrewsbury and Crewe.

British Transport Police said officers were working to identify the woman, who was believed to be from Shrewsbury.

Mansel Williams, who chairs the Shropshire, Telford and Marches Strategic Rail Group, said safety at level crossings was its 'top priority'. Incidents such as this were distressing, he added.
