Shrewsbury fans sign online petition on logo

Hundreds of Shrewsbury Town fans have signed a petition asking for the former club badge to be reinstated.

The e-petition, called We want Shrewsbury Town to return to their historic badge, has been signed by more than 250 people and says the crest looks like it has been taken off computer program Microsoft clipart.

Shrewsbury Town bosses decided to adopt a new logo at the start of the 2007-08 season, coinciding with the move to their Oteley Road ground.

Professional designer and lifelong Town fan Tony Brooks designed the crest, which was said to meet complex requirements of 21st century trademark law.

But a section of Shrews' fans are still aggrieved that the club's traditional badge was discarded.

The petition reads: "One thing which many supporters cannot accept is the change of logo from the 'loggerheads' emblem, which is representative of the town of Shrewsbury and the historic county of Salop, to a single lion's head taken off Microsoft clipart.

"Although it could be argued it represents the club's roots, the club having being founded in the Lion Hotel, the execution is far from great and it is also extremely easy to copy the lion at the centre of the design to produce 'knock-off' merchandise."

Shrewsbury Town Football Club was unavailable to comment.
