A petition with more than 700 signatures calling for Bishop's Castle's branch of Barclays to be saved will be sent to bosses at the bank in the next few days.

The signatures have been collected in a month in the town in a bid to stop the bank in High Street from closing on June 29.

It would leave the town with just one major bank – HSBC – and force Barclays customers to travel to Ludlow, Craven Arms, Church Stretton or Knighton to use another branch.

Ludlow MP Philip Dunne and Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow, have lobbied Barclays in a bid to maintain the branch.

But Barclays has insisted it is one of the least used in Shropshire.

Councillor Charlotte Barnes, who represents the town on Shropshire Council and has been leading the petition campaign, said: "The petition is being sent off this week and we will see if Barclays take any notice of it."
