Experts have been drafted in after temperatures rocketed at a multi-million pound leisure centre in Telford – forcing council bosses to scrap some exercise classes.

Telford & Wrekin Council had to cancel a number of classes after an aerobics studio became too hot to use at the Abraham Darby Leisure Centre, which was only opened in January this year.

Specialists have now been called in to monitor temperatures across the building to find the cause of the problem.

The sports centre opened in January as part of a £35 million development that also includes new buildings for the Abraham Darby Academy and Woodlands Primary School.

It has a whole life fitness suite, a 25-metre swimming pool with a moveable height floor, sports hall and an aerobics studio.

Council bosses said they had to cancel a number of aerobics classes due to take place in the leisure centre's studio because of high room temperatures.

Charlotte Baker, spokeswoman for Telford & Wrekin Council, today said: "We apologise for the disruption to our customers.

"Telford & Wrekin Council is currently undertaking investigations with specialist contractors to establish why the higher than expected internal temperatures are currently being experienced.

"In order to understand more about how the current system is performing it is important that we establish how the system performs whilst the facilities are in use."

Miss Baker said classes held yesterday went ahead, free of charge, so temperature checks could be carried out. She added all other activities remain unaffected.

The leisure centre replaces the Madeley Court Sports Centre, which closed before Christmas. The whole development is expected to be completed next month when the Abraham Darby Academy moves into its new building.
