A gang of thieves stole specialist bikes and equipment worth thousands of pounds – just hours before a group of cyclists were due to perform at a top race in Shropshire.

Police believe a professional gang was behind the thefts of at least seven bikes and clothing from riders due to compete in an elite cycle race in Craven Arms.

It is understood the race went ahead. Officers said thieves struck early yesterday morning just before riders were to compete in the National Points Cross Country Series in Hopton Castle.

They said the equipment was stolen by 'professional' thieves. Police were still investigating the extent of the thefts after riders from across the country arrived in Shropshire to take part.

Jane Fitzpatrick, West Mercia Police duty inspector, said: "We had four telephone reports to inform us that there had been a number of bike thefts from Craven Arms.

"This was an elite cycle race and it is unclear at present exactly what and how many items have been taken. This appears to be a professional job as specific bikes have been taken. It looks like the culprit or culprits knew what they were doing."

Race organisers were not available for comment.

Information to police on 101.
