Gale-force winds and heavy rain battered Shropshire and mid Wales bringing down trees and creating treacherous driving conditions.

A tree crashed down blocking Roslyn Road, in Wellington, and crushing the back gates of Wrekin College, near the school's cricket clubhouse, at about 3pm yesterday.

And near Shrewsbury, a tree had to be cleared today after it fell down onto the Cross Houses to Atcham road.

The area of low pressure which lashed many parts of England with winds of up to 65mph should begin to move away today, leading to sunny spells across parts of the country. But another front moving in tomorrow morning will bring clouds – and more rain with it.

The Environment Agency said heavy rain had resulted in a flood alert being put on the River Teme near Ludlow yesterday but it had now peaked at 1.56m and the alert had been removed.

Victoria Kettley, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "As this pressure moves into the North Sea, the winds should ease down, with gusts of 30-35mph across the country by midday.

"As the low pressure clears, the showers we have seen should also clear away."

But she warned that another area of low pressure was expected to move across parts of the UK tomorrow, bringing wet weather to Wales and the Midlands.

Nationally, a teenager died after crashing his motorcycle during heavy rain and high winds in Lancing, West Sussex. The 18-year-old received serious head injuries in the crash and died in hospital yesterday.
