Teenage sensation Will Enefer has created Shropshire golfing history by trumping the achievements of three former Ryder Cup stars.
The 14-year-old – from Old Park in Telford – was the shock winner of the Shropshire & Herefordshire Amateur Championship at Lilleshall, beating off competition from 54 of the leading adult golfers from the two counties.
And it ensured Enefer became the youngest ever winner of the biggest tournament on the county rota.
Peter Baker, who represented Europe at the 1993 Ryder Cup held the previous record when he lifted the title as a 15-year-old in 1983 , while Major champions Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam were 16 and 17 respectively when they first claimed the Championship in the mid- 1970s.
"It's an amazing achievement and Will was very happy," said his father Neil Enefer.
Rounds of 69 and 71 gave Enefer a 36-hole, four-over-par total of 140 in Sunday's event and booked his place in the play-off alongside Market Drayton's Matt Birch and Ed Tranter who was playing over his home course.
Tranter was eliminated with a par at the first in the sudden death shoot-out after the other two each carded a birdie.
And it was Enefer who held his nerve with another birdie at the second when he drove the green on the 314-yard second and then two-putted for an historic triumph.
The Thomas Telford School pupil's success continued his meteoric rise considering he only took up competitive golf two years ago.
In that period, he has seen his handicap plummet from 26 to three, while he has also become a regular in the S & H Under 18 side.
Enefer, who trained with the regional England under 16 squad in Derbyshire, is now targetting some of England's biggest junior events and will compete in the national Under 16 and 15 championships – the McGregor and Douglas Johns Trophies – in July and August respectively.
