Ironbridge Rowing Club chairman Bill Scott said: "Our focus is always on safety and so we had to make the tough decision on Saturday afternoon to stop the racing because of the river level and the strong flow.
"We then decided that it was unlikely to improve for Sunday so cancelled the racing."
The river rose by about one metre in 24 hours and water levels at the World Heritage Site were at 2.47 metres when the event was abandoned.
