A 37-year-old woman from Shropshire is in a serious condition in hospital after her car was involved in a collision with a lorry.

The woman, who has not been named but is from Shrewsbury, had to be cut free from the wreckage of her car.

She suffered serious facial injuries in the crash on the A530 Whitchurch Road in Newhall, near Whitchurch.

Firefighters had to remove the roof of the Ford Mondeo in which the woman was travelling in order to free her.

She was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, where her condition was today described as 'serious but stable'.

Police said two passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries and were also taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 5.33pm on Thursday a HGV was travelling along the A530 Whitchurch Road towards Nantwich when it was in collision with a silver Ford Mondeo travelling in the opposite direction."
