Adult education service Learndirect is to be axed in Shropshire – putting up to 10 jobs at risk – after bosses withdrew funding because of a lack of demand.

Learndirect, a Government-backed not-for-profit organisation specialising in adult learning and vocational skills courses, has decided not to renew its contract with Walford and North Shropshire College, which ran courses at sites in Oswestry, Wem, Shipley, near Bridgnorth, and Burford, near Ludlow.

College bosses said it means that from September Learndirect courses will no longer be offered. Principal Andrew Tyley said Learndirect felt not enough students were using the service to justify further funding.

He said WNSC was the last provider of Learndirect courses in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. But he stressed the loss of the contract would not jeopardise the future of the centres used to deliver the courses.
