A man died after a fire broke out in the bedroom of his terraced house in Telford today. The unnamed victim was declared dead at the scene by ambulance crews.

Emergency services were called to the fire in Brunel Road, Dawley, Telford, shortly before 2.30am.

Suzie Fothergill, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance, said: "Two ambulances and a paramedic were in attendance, but unfortunately the man was deceased when they got there."

Fire crews from Tweedale, Wellington and Telford all attended the fire.

John Pritchard, from Telford Fire Station, said: "The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the damage was confined to the flat."

Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said officers were called shortly after 2.30am by the fire service, who reported a man was trapped in the flat.

He said firefighters forced their way into the building and carried out an unconscious man. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

He said: "We are keeping an open mind, although it does not appear to be suspicious."

In an earlier incident in Oswestry, two fire engines were called out to a fire on the second floor of a mid-terrace house in Beatrice Street, which is believed to be an old shop.

The damage was confined to a space under floorboards in a bathroom. No one was in the building at the time.
